What do you think about Nottingham Contemporary building?

In autumn 2009, Nottingham Contemporary will open its doors to the public. I am really excited that Nottingham will have a new art centre however I have mixed feelings about the building’s external design. It is definitely a modern design that gives a new look and feel in the neighbourhood, however not sure if this was the right approach for a contemporary art centre.

For those of you who didn't have the chance to see the building have a look here:

So what do you think? Love it? Hate it?

Surely I can't be the first person to reply to this (posted back in April!!).

Ok, I rekindled m interest in NC a few months ago - I'd heard about it several years ago before development began but had my head stuck in commercial projects until recently.

Well, I have to say I haven't been overly impressed with the exterior design at least. My very first impression, from a distance, was 'cargo container'. Close up it didn't get much better, the frilly lace embossing into the curved panels failing to really enhance the overall effect for me. Dressing it with gold coloured strips also does nothing to change the fact that structurally it just looks unimpressive.
Now, I know the site hasn't been easy to develop, and the multi-purpose interior specs must have been fairly demanding as well, but at a cost of £20million I was really expecting something more striking. I'm seriously having doubts about how some of this public money has been spent, and am wondering whether what has been delivered by the architects is really quite a poor show.

That really covers my aesthetic response. However, there is much more that has concerned me about this project that has prompted me to start (a couple of months ago) a Facebook group, 'Nottingham Contemporary' Free Discussion Group. Please come and take a look if you're interested - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=130453149612
Interesting question.

I largely agree with the comments of Daniel Rose.

When I first saw the exterior I assumed that it was the protective covering that would be removed to reveal a glorious building underneath. The design is growing on me a little the more I see it, but I would rather it draw my interest for good design rather than strange.

On a positve note, I like the concept of the NC and to that extent, the building as a whole should be considered as a postive thing in my view.

Best,

Robert
I like what it's bought to the city, people seem interested and have travelled a fair distance to come see the exhibition. This puts culture and the arts high on the agenda for the area, which can only be a good thing too.

Living in the area and walking the route regularly, I think the parts of the building from the side of Pitcher and Piano, down the steps to the Cafe/Bar Contemporary is great, and looks stunning when lit up at night.

With regard to the rest of the building, I can't help but think that so much more could have been done with the money and the space, and fast forward 20 years, I think it will probably become a bit of an eyesore!
